আমরা পৃথিবীতে সব কিছু পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খভাবে মাপতে পারিনি পারবও না।
প্রকৃতির যা নিয়ম-কানুন সেই নিয়ম কানুনের মাপের সাথে আমাদের তৈরি করা মাপন যন্ত্রে কিছু ত্রুটি আছেই এবং আমরাও কিন্তু নিজেরাও কিছুটা পক্ষপাত দুষ্টু। মাপজোখের ব্যাপারটা কিন্তু সবটাই ব্যবসায়িক স্বার্থে। বৈজ্ঞানিক স্বার্থটা কম। যে কারণে যে প্রকৃতির বিষয়গুলি পুঙ্খানুভাবে মাপার বিষয়টাতে কোন প্রতিষ্ঠান আগ্রহ দেখায় না কারণ এখন তো পুরোটাই বিজ্ঞানের নামে চলছে বাণিজ্য এবং রাজনীতি। দেখুন ভারতের বিভিন্ন প্রদেশে বিভিন্ন রকমের কুনকের মাপ ছিল। সব জায়গায় এক নয়। অতি সরলীকরণ করে সব মাপকে একরকম ভাবছি।
যেমন মনে করুন মাটিতে কত , খনিজ পদার্থ ,অনুখাদ্য, অণুজীব রয়েছে। তাদের পারস্পরিক কার্যকলাপ গাছ যখন মাটি থেকে খাবার নিচ্ছে সেই কার্যকলাপের নিয়ম কানুন আমরা মাপতে পারিনি।। মাটির একটা দ্রবন তৈরি করে আমরা মাটি পরীক্ষা করছি নাইট্রোজেন ফসফেট পটাশিয়াম আর যেটা নিচে পড়ে থাকা অংশ তাতে যে কি পদার্থ আছে সেটা কিন্তু আমরা মাপতেই পারলাম না।।
বিভিন্ন খনিজের জৈব ফ্র্যাকশন আমরা তো মাপতেই পারছি না। অনুজীবের কতটুকু অংশ মাপতে পারছি? জলীয় দ্রবন অংশের বিশ্লেষন করে আমরা বলছি মাটির বিষয় আমরা জেনে ফেলেছি । ধানক্ষেতে আমরা ধানের ফলনের কথা বলছি। কিন্তু খড়, সহযোগী উদ্ভিদ, ধানের সঙ্গে মাছ, মাটির উর্বরতার সহায়ক বিভিন্ন অণুজীবের পরিস্থিতি আমরা ধর্তব্যের বিষয় মনে করি না। ।

If we measure coastlines using a 200 km ruler, specifying that both ends of the ruler must touch the coast; smaller the ruler, the longer the resulting coastline.
Lewis Fry Richardson demonstrated that measured length of coastlines, and other natural features, increases without limit as the unit of measurement is made smaller.
The Coastline Paradox is most pronounced in the mathematical certainty that you can shorten the length of your measuring stick to the length of an atom and the result will be a coastline infinite kilometres long.
This mathematical problem is due to fractals and arises even without considering the erosion and rising sea levels.
Today we are constantly crunching numbers to justify our points of view from abstract equations, imaginary constants, data, which are themselves in state of evolving flux of understanding and speculation…..rest all is considered regressive, romantic, and stories.
